Fondling

The UMBC Police issue Crime Alerts to protect members of the University community, to promote safety, to help reduce the likelihood of future crimes, and to raise awareness of how to seek prompt assistance should a crime occur.


Reported Incident: Sexual Assault


Location: Harbor Hall Courtyard


Reported Date/Time: May 19, 2023, at 3:04 p.m.


Occurred Date/Time: May 14, 2023, at approximately 12:30 a.m.


Description:


UMBC Police received a report of a fondling on May 19, 2023, at 3:04 p.m. The fondling occurred at approximately 12:30 a.m. on May 14, 2023 in the Harbor Hall Courtyard. The victim reported the unknown suspect engaged them in conversation while they were walking back to their residence hall and fondled the victim when they walked by an isolated area in the courtyard of Harbor Hall.

Sexual Violence Information and Resources 

  • Sexual assault is never the victim's fault. The only person responsible for sexual misconduct is the perpetrator.

  • The most common type of sexual assault occurs between individuals known to one another, including an acquaintance or in the context of a current or prior dating or domestic relationship.

  • Alcohol and drugs are often used to create vulnerability. Studies of sexual assault incidents show a high correlation between non-stranger sexual assault and drug/alcohol usage. Be alert to people pressuring you or others to use alcohol or other drugs.

  • Tell someone you trust where you are going and when you plan to return.

  • Trust your instincts. If you feel uneasy or sense something is wrong, do what you can to get out of that situation or call for assistance.

  • On campus sexual violence resources can be found at oei.umbc.edu.

  • Contact UMBC Police at (410) 455-5555 to request an escort if you feel unsafe walking on or near campus.

Students in need of support can contact Retriever Integrated Health. Faculty and staff can access support through the Employee Assistance Program.


Community members may report instances of sexual misconduct, discrimination, hate, or bias through the Office of Equity and Inclusion's confidential reporting form.
