Relationship Violence Information and Resources

  • Relationship violence is never the victim's fault. The only person responsible is the abuser.
  • Physical violence is only a part of a larger pattern of abuse. This may also include emotional, sexual, and economic abuse.
  • Relationship violence is not just a momentary loss of temper. The abuser makes a conscious decision to abuse. Loss of temper is a tool to enforce control through fear, and it is a part of a pattern of abuse.
  • Contact the Office of Equity and Civil Rights for on campus relationship violence resources.

Consent

  • Consent is defined as a knowing, voluntary, and affirmatively communicated willingness to mutually participate in a particular sexual activity or behavior.
  • Consent cannot be obtained by force, threat, coercion, fraud, manipulation, reasonable fear of injury, intimidation, or through the use of one's mental or physical helplessness or incapacity.
  • Silence or lack of physical resistance does not equal consent. Consent may be withdrawn at any time.
