Motor Vehicle Theft

The UMBC Police Department issues Crime Alerts to protect members of the University community, to promote safety, and to help reduce vulnerability. 

In accordance with the Clery Act, electric scooters are classified as motor vehicles. 

Reported Incident: Motor Vehicle Theft

Location: Chesapeake Hall

Reported Date/Time: May 30, 2024, 4:30 p.m.

Occurred Date/Time: May 19, 2024, 12:00 p.m. - May 30, 2024, 2:00 p.m.

Incident Description: An e-scooter was reported stolen from a bicycle rack outside of Chesapeake Hall. The theft occurred sometime between 12:00 p.m. on May 19, 2024, and 2:00 p.m. on May 30, 2024.

Safety Tips

Victims are not to blame. Perpetrators are responsible for criminal behavior. The following safety tips may reduce vulnerability:

  • Stay alert and attuned to people are circumstances around you. Report suspicious activity to UMBC Police immediately.
  • Lock your scooter to a bicycle rack with a high quality U-lock.
  • Remove the battery if possible.
  • Register your e-scooter with Parking Services.
