Reported Incident: Attempted Motor Vehicle Theft

Location: Walker Avenue

Reported Date/Time: June 14, 2024, 9:05 a.m.

Occurred Date/Time: June 13, 2024, 4:00 p.m. - June 14, 2024, 9:05 a.m.

Incident Description: An attempted theft of a Kia occurred on the corner of Walker Avenue and Hilltop Circle sometime between 4:00 p.m. yesterday and 9:05 a.m. this morning.

The victim parked and secured the vehicle at approximately 4:00 p.m. The vehicle was observed at 9:05 a.m. with a broken window and a damaged ignition.

Safety Tips

Victims are not to blame. Perpetrators are responsible for criminal behavior. The following safety tips may reduce vulnerability:

  • Stay alert and attuned to people and circumstances around you. Report suspicious activity to UMBC Police immediately.
  • Remove USB cables from vehicles while not in use.
  • Park in well-lit, highly visible areas.
  • Lock your vehicle and take valuables with you.
  • Consider purchasing a steering wheel lock or other anti-theft device.
  • A limited number of steering wheel locks are available at the UMBC Police Department for owners of Honda, Hyundai, and Kia vehicles.
