Response to Motor Vehicle Thefts
Continued efforts
Dear UMBC Community,
Recently, there has been an increase in motor vehicle thefts and attempted thefts on our campus. These incidents have taken place in parking garages, lots, and various streets and areas throughout the campus. Hyundais are the most frequent target, but Hondas, Infinitis, and Kias have also been affected. Broken door handles, shattered glass, and/or damaged steering wheel columns are common indicators of an attempted theft.
UMBC Police is exploring additional measures to prevent vehicle thefts and continuing the following:
- Utilizing increased patrols of parking garages and lots, as well as other parking spaces around campus, including around residence halls;
- Conducting frequent, random checks of targeted areas in the afternoon, evening, and early morning hours; and
- Installing advanced security cameras equipped with AI technology to enhance monitoring in the parking lots. The system will help detect and deter suspicious activity in real time while also documenting incidents for investigative purposes.
As always, we remind you to secure your vehicles by locking them and avoiding leaving valuables inside. Use of anti-theft devices such as steering wheel locks or key fob Faraday cages is highly encouraged.
We also ask you to remain vigilant and attentive to your surroundings and promptly report suspicious activity to UMBC Police by calling 410-455-5555.
The safety and security of our campus community is our top priority. Thank you for your part in helping us deter and prevent further incidents of theft.
Sincerely,
David M. Fields, Chief of Police
