Bicycle Thefts
UMBC is offering “U” type bicycle locks, free of charge
The Campus has seen a recent spike in bicycle thefts, particularly in and around the residence halls. The UMBC Police have made two recent arrests; however, we are still seeing these crimes occur. In nearly all cases individuals are using bolt cutters to remove cable style locks.
We offer the following tips to help better protect your bicycle:
- Register your bicycle with the UMBC Police by visiting the police station. We are open 24/7 and will affix an identifying tag to your bicycle as well as enter it into our database.
- You can also register your bicycle by emailing Sgt. Jamie Cheatem at jcheateam@umbc.edu to make an appointment for Sgt. Cheatem and Officer “Chip” to come to you and register your bicycle.
- Once your bicycle is registered with us we will provide you with a “U” type bicycle lock, free of charge. These locks are very difficult to defeat and will decrease the likelihood of your bicycle being stolen.
- Lock your bicycle frame and wheels to an immovable object. This likely requires a “U” type lock paired with a cable lock.
If you see someone acting suspiciously near a bicycle rack, call us at 410-455-5555.
